Be Battle Ready - The ordinary sessions are the ones that matter most

Hi Reader,

If you caught this week's podcast you'll already know who Dan John is and why I went back into the archives to bring that conversation to a wider audience.

But there's one thing Dan said that didn't make it into the episode summary, and it's the thing I keep coming back to.

He talked about his training week in terms of five sessions. One or two of them are great - the kind you'd post about online. One or two are genuinely embarrassing - the kind where you wonder why you bothered. And three are just normal. Nothing special. Forgettable, really.

But here's the point he made that stopped me in my tracks.

Multiply those ordinary sessions by 52 weeks. Then multiply that by 10 years. The mass of consistent, normal, unremarkable training that accumulates over a decade overwhelms everything else. The bad sessions don't matter. The missed sessions don't matter. The brilliant ones don't matter as much as you think either.

What matters is the ordinary ones. Done consistently. Year after year.

That's the physical pension Dan and I talked about. Not the heroic blocks. Not the perfect programme. The steady, quiet accumulation of ordinary sessions over a very long time.

And here's the honest part. That kind of consistency is genuinely hard to maintain alone. Not because the sessions are hard - they're ordinary by definition. But because life gets in the way. Motivation dips. Race season ends and the structure disappears. The strength sessions get dropped because they feel optional. The easy weeks turn into weeks off.

What most athletes need isn't a better programme. It's a structure that keeps them showing up for the ordinary sessions when nothing in particular is motivating them to do so.

That's what SWAT Inner Circle is built around. Coaching, structure, community, and accountability - designed specifically for endurance athletes over 50 who want to still be lining up at start lines in their 60s and 70s.

New members join at £65 a month. No minimum term. Cancel any time.

If four weeks of these emails have resonated - if you've found yourself nodding along and thinking that sounds like me - then SWAT is probably the logical next step.

P.S. If you haven't caught this week's Dan John episode yet it's well worth your time - particularly the section on the 35 to 55 window being the most important investment you'll ever make in your physical future.
