Yes, the Pros Train 30 Hours a Week. Here Is Why That Is Irrelevant to You.
Last week I wrote about recovery-centred training and why how much you can recover from matters more than how much you train. Not everyone was convinced. Good. The pushback told me people were actually thinking about it, which is exactly what I want.
Here are the eight most common objections, answered as plainly as I can.
1. If volume doesn't matter, why do professional athletes train 20-30 hours a week?
I never said volume does not matter. The argument was that volume without adequate recovery is counterproductive. The difference between a professional triathlete and an age grouper is not just talent. It is the recovery infrastructure surrounding them. Sleep coaches, nutritionists, physios, altitude camps, no commute, no desk job, no school run. They do not train 20-30 hours a week and recover later. They recover well enough to allow 10-30 hours of training. Give most age groupers the same recovery infrastructure and they could train significantly more too. Volume has to be adjusted to fit the recovery that is actually available. That was the point.

2. Surely you still need long rides and long runs to prepare for a long race?
Completely true. Specificity is a fundamental training principle and I have never suggested otherwise. The question is not whether to do long sessions. It is how many, how often, and whether you are recovering from them. Most athletes could do fewer long sessions than they think, done well and properly recovered from, and arrive at race day in better shape than they would after grinding through every one on the generic plan.
3. The Whoop study was only eight weeks long and involved 5k runners. What does that have to do with Ironman?
A fair challenge. Most research studies are eight to twelve weeks because longer cohorts are genuinely difficult to maintain. The reason I referenced it is that it compared identical training plans with and without recovery adjustment at a meaningful scale, nearly 3,000 people. The finding that the same adaptations occurred with less training and 30% fewer injuries is relevant regardless of event distance. I also worked with more than one athlete who trained for 4-5 years averaging roughly 10 hours a week consistently, qualified for Kona multiple times and almost never missed a session. That is a longitudinal version of the same principle.
4. High volume has worked for me. Are you saying I am wrong?
No. There are always outliers in any research population, and I cannot argue with your individual results. What I would ask is this. How old are you? Under 40, your capacity to absorb high volume is considerably greater. How consistent were you across many months, or was this a short block followed by an injury? Most people who tell me high volume works for them are either younger, have simpler lives, or are not accounting for the training they missed in between.
5. Is recovery-centred training just an excuse to be lazy?
Here is the opposite argument. Following a generic plan and opening TrainingPeaks every morning to do whatever it says regardless of how you slept or what your stress load is takes no judgment at all. That is blind optimism, not discipline. Recovery-centred training requires you to make a genuine judgment call every single day. How did I sleep? What is my stress load? Is this session going to produce a return or just add more fatigue? And then you have to be honest about the answer and overcome the ego that wants you to do the hard session anyway. That takes considerably more discipline than just following the plan. Laziness is grinding through a session your body was not ready for. Discipline is listening to the signals and making the harder call.

6. My coach has given me this plan. Are you saying my coach is wrong?
Not at all. No coach, however good, can predict everything your next few weeks will contain. Sick children, elderly parents, sudden work demands, a bad night's sleep before a hard session. A good plan is a starting point, not a contract. The best coaching relationships are ones where the athlete and coach discuss what happens when the plan meets reality. A plan is good until you get punched in the face. What matters is what you do next.
7. Does a recovery-centred approach undermine periodisation?
No, because periodisation and recovery-centred training are pointing in the same direction. Periodisation is about applying focused stress over a block of time and then allowing the body to absorb it. The problem is when athletes try to cram everything into the final weeks, skip the recovery, and wonder why they arrive at race day exhausted. A periodised plan done properly already has recovery built in. The recovery-centred approach just makes that explicit from the start rather than treating recovery as the thing that happens when training permits.
8. I only have twelve weeks until my race. I cannot afford to do less training.
Here is the other side of that argument. Can you afford to get injured? Athletes do everything right for months and then panic in the final weeks, pile on volume their body was not prepared for, get ill or injured, and miss the training they were trying to protect. Panic training feels productive and rarely is. Stay consistent, do what your body is ready to absorb, and arrive at the start line healthy. The athlete who turns up slightly undertrained but fresh and injury-free will almost always outperform the one who arrives exhausted from a block they could not handle.
The question I would leave you with is the same one I asked last week. How much training can you actually recover from, and how much can you consistently complete? Look at your training data from the last three to six months. The honest answer is probably lower than you would like. But it is almost certainly closer to the truth.
